“Other people have it way worse, I should be grateful.”
“It happened so long ago, I should be over it now.”
“It's done, so what’s the point in going into it?”
Despite these thoughts, you find this memory or moment keeps creeping back into the front of your mind. It might live there constantly, or maybe it hides deep inside. You’re afraid that talking about this might be opening your "Pandora’s Box", and you’re not sure how to close that once it’s opened.
We cannot make what happened to you go away. It’s now a part of your story; but we can make it only a chapter in your life, not a lead role. By reviewing your past we can make sense of how you have integrated this trauma into your life, and organize it into your “big picture” in a way that can be more bearable, and not affect you as strongly as it does today.
You will shift from feeling like a “victim” to the survivor that you are. You will embrace your intuition and courage, and learn to be soft and tender with the wounded parts of yourself. You will find that although this pain will never totally dissipate, with trauma counseling you will be able to find a space for it in your mind, where it is no longer able to control you on a daily basis.
YOU will be in control, not what happened to you.
